Foundation Stage Curriculum

In short: Our EYFS educational programmes involve activities and experiences for children, as follows

Development involves giving children opportunities to experience a rich language environment; to develop their confidence and skills in expressing themselves; and to speak and listen in a range of situations

Involves providing opportunities for young children to be active and interactive; and to develop their co-ordination, control, and movement. Children must also be helped to understand the importance of physical activity, and to make healthy choices in relation to food.

Involves helping children to develop a positive sense of themselves, and others; to form positive relationships and develop respect for others; to develop social skills and learn how to manage their feelings; to understand appropriate behaviour in groups; and to have confidence in their own abilities.

Development involves encouraging children to link sounds and letters and to begin to read and write. Children must be given access to a wide range of reading materials (books, poems, and other written materials) to ignite their interest.

Involves providing children with opportunities to develop and improve their skills in counting, understanding and using numbers, calculating simple addition and subtraction problems; and to describe shapes, spaces, and measures.

Involves guiding children to make sense of their physical world and their community through opportunities to explore, observe and find out about people, places, technology and the environment.

Involves enabling children to explore and play with a wide range of media and materials, as well as providing opportunities and encouragement for sharing their thoughts, ideas and feelings through a variety of activities in art, music, movement, dance, role-play, and design and technology.

Day to Day

  • We offer children a wide variety of activities which stimulate learning through play as well as giving them the grounding to prepare them for the next step in their education. Staff observe the children – recording observations, photos  and videos to the child’s records on Tapestry, our online learning journal package. These records can then be monitored and the children can be encouraged to move on if they have reached a stage of development. Thus future activities can also be planned to encourage progression.
  • Each day consists of a familiar timetable including registration, free play, snack time and story time. In addition, we include key activities relevant to the topic of the week.

Snack Time

  • Our snack times are always centred around healthy eating with different fruits and vegetables always on offer to the children, as well as a choice of milk or water.
  • Water is also on offer throughout the session.
  • Food allergies and intolerance’s are noted and adhered to daily.

Special Needs

  • Sunnymede pre-school has experience in many areas of special needs.
  • The setting currently supports a number of children with speech and language development problems and English as a second language.
  • We aim to support all children whatever the need.

Uniform

  • We encourage all our children to wear the pre-school uniform which consists of yellow t-shirts and navy sweatshirts featuring the school logo. Uniforms are available on request for a small fee. We find uniforms are wonderful for giving children a sense of belonging. It also saves other clothes from paint!
  • We do ask that you provide a spare set of welly boots during the winter months and that shoes worn in pre-school are soft soled, and are not laced shoes.
  • In Summer months please can sandals have closed in toes for safety – no flip flops.
  • We kindly ask that for safety reasons, children do not wear jewellery in the pre-school.

Packed Lunch

Children attending the afternoon sessions on a Monday, Wednesday or Thursday, need to bring a pack lunch to eat. Lunchtimes have proved very beneficial in getting children used to eating with others, opening their own packaging and table discipline. All of which set them in good stead for their reception year ahead. In order to maintain familiarity, we ask that packed lunches follow the guidelines set by the infant school. To this end, we respectfully suggest the following ingredients:

  • Sandwich / Wrap / Roll
  • Pasta (With Fork)
  • Fruit
  • Yoghurts with spoons…No Yoghurt pouches or tubes i.e. Frubes
  • No chocolate or sweets
  • No peanuts or nuts
  • Ice Packs – Please make sure your child is familiar with the ice pack and knows not to attempt to open it!
  • Please do not use plastic bags.

Fundraising

We have ONE BIG fundraising event every year, and we ask you to do your best to support us. All the monies raised is used to replace, upgrade, and keep us up to date with toys and educational material needed to enhance your child’s pre-school years. The fees charged monthly purely cover the general running costs of the group so please support your pre-school in the summer term – it is for your child’s benefit.  Many thanks in advance.

Outings

We have an annual outing for parents/relatives, children and friends so please watch the notice board in the summer term. Also our Teddy Bears picnics – so why not join us and your child and share a play day at Norsey Woods

Sickness

In the event of your child contracting a contagious illness – please let us know – we can then inform other parents so they can be prepared for any symptoms. Any information will be posted immediately in our window. Your child should be well before returning to pre-school. If in doubt please phone the pre-school.

Allow 48 hours clear after sickness/tummy bug. (This is a directive from the Health Authority).
